What is an SPF record?

SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is a DNS record that lists which servers are allowed to send email for your domain. When a receiving server gets an email claiming to be from you, it checks your SPF record to see if the sending IP is authorized.

If the IP isn't listed, the email fails SPF — which can mean rejection, spam filtering, or a hit to your domain reputation. SPF records also have a 10 DNS lookup limit. Exceed it and the entire record breaks, causing a permanent error for every email you send.

Common problems include multiple SPF records (you can only have one), missing include statements for email services you use, and syntax errors that silently invalidate the whole record.
